Purchased the Hamilton Khaki Murph 38mm on leather strap. This has been a watch I have wanted for a while and purchased from First Class Watches. Overall, the Seiko HBC005J1 is a beautifully executed watch, combining a classic retro aesthetic with thoroughly modern functionality. The vintage-inspired design makes it a strong competitor to the Tudor Black Bay line, while the colour combination works exceptionally well and gives the watch a distinctive character of its own. The proportions are excellent too — a very wearable size that should suit a wide range of wrists.

The bracelet is another strong point. The micro-adjustment system is particularly useful, allowing the fit to be fine-tuned throughout the day and providing the flexibility needed when wearing the watch over a wetsuit. If the bracelet needs substantial shortening, however, I would recommend having it sized by a reputable watchmaker unless you specifically ask the retailer to do it before dispatch. Once correctly sized, the bracelet is very comfortable.

I have read a few reviews suggesting that the bezel action is rather quiet or “silent”. Personally, I disagree. I find it very good — precise, positive and controlled, almost like a precision instrument. The accuracy of my watch has also been more than satisfactory, gaining approximately 15 seconds per week, which I consider excellent for a mechanical watch.

Another practical advantage is that changing the bracelet for a different strap is relatively straightforward at home, provided you have the correct tool. The drilled lugs make access to the spring bars considerably easier, which is a feature I particularly appreciate.

If I had to identify one minor criticism, it would be the rather small date window. However, I suspect this was a deliberate design choice to keep it relatively unobtrusive and preserve the watch’s vintage character.

Overall, this is a very attractive, characterful and capable diver. The combination of retro styling, excellent proportions, precise bezel action, useful bracelet adjustment and good mechanical accuracy makes the HBC005J1 a particularly compelling watch.
